Recalled chicken nuggets – sold at WalMart

Perdue Farms Inc. is recalling close to 100,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets that were sold through WalMart. The recall was initiated after the company noticed pieces of blue plastic in the nuggets. Beware the blue chicken nugget!

New Florida Boating Law

According to an AP story, law enforcement officials will soon start increasing the enforcement of a new Florida boating law that recently went into effect. Most people don’t know about the new law and you probably don’t want to get caught by surprise. Fines will range from fifty to eighty dollars.

The new law requires Florida boaters born on or after Jan. 1, 1988 to take and pass a state approved boating education course in order to pilot any vessel with 10 or more horsepower. The new law also applies to non-Florida residents with a few exceptions like those with a USCG Master’s license.

More and more people will be affected every year since it is tied to a specific date and not an age. Being an avid boater all my life, I believe this will go a long way towards improving boating safety. It won’t end all the boat accidents out on the water but I have to believe that if more people understood the basic right of way rules – we would all be better off. Driving a boat is not like driving a car and some people shouldn’t even be driving a car. Biggest difference is that boats don’t have brakes.

Let’s be safe out there on the water and don’t forget all your required safety equipment. If you can’t swim, wear a USCG approved life vest.

Cold Weather Got You Down – Let’s Go Boating

Usually March brings us cool mornings and warm afternoons but this is ridiculous. Looks like the cold pattern may break towards the weekend. Hopefully, it will warm up enough for me to get my Ski Nautique out from under all that I have piled on it in the last 5 months and see if it still runs like a top.

A good couple days of cleaning, preventive maintenance and prep work go a long way towards enjoying a safe accident-free spring and summer boating season. As I finished typing that sentence, Mr Sunshine appeared! Now we’re talking.

I have been around boats all my life and have owned my current one for over 20 years now so I know it pretty well but I never hesitate to make sure everything is functioning properly and all my safety equipment is right where I left it. Do you know what safety equipment is required on your boat? When is the last time you actually put your hands on your life jackets or tested your fire extinguisher? Have your kids outgrown last year’s stuff? Mine have. I’m still trying to get rid of the infant jackets from 3 0r 4 years ago. You wouldn’t leave the dock without your lunch, drinks, rods and reels, bait etc….but how many times have you thought.. it’s such a nice day why do I need my radio, my anchor. You get my drift! If you have been boating enough you should clearly understand how quickly that nice day can change.

Radiation treatment hazards

Recalled strollers – finger amputation hazard

One of the strollers recalled

Graco has recalled over 1.5 million strollers after reports of 7 children being injured with the opening and closing of the stroller canopy. Five of those children suffered amputations due to the defective hinge, 2 received lacerations. Here’s the link to the Consumer Product Safety Commission notice (CPSC) – stroller recall. It lists all the applicable model #’s affected by the recall.

Big traffic accident

Two semi trucks collided while travelling south on Interstate 95 this morning leaving one of the drivers dead. The truck accident happened just south of the St John’s County / Flagler County line. Traffic is a mess on 95 and on US 1 near 95. Only reason I know about the traffic is that my wife is stuck in it trying to get down to Orlando.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the truck driver and his/her family. Just a reminder of how quickly our lives can change. Please be careful on the roads as everyone starts to travel to family and friends for the holidays.

Texting while Driving

Driver distraction caused the deaths of nearly 6,000 people and the injuries of 500,000 people last year according to new government reports on auto safety. There is a correlation of using mobile devices while driving. This includes texting while driving and talking on the cell.

Transportation officials recently released a report that showed driver distraction being involved in 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008. The Transportation report shows that 515,000 people were injured and 5,870 people were killed last year, with driver distraction being involved in the accident.

The Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, government officials, safety advocates, researchers and lawmakers came together last month to discuss ways of setting new restrictions on texting and using devices while driving. Young adults involved in car accidents where they were texting while driving were also involved in the safety discussions. New data supports that 16 percent of all under-20 drivers involved in fatal car accidents were distracted while driving.

Every day, people text and drive, even in places where it’s outlawed. According to Secretary LaHood “We feel a very strong obligation to point to incidents where people have been killed or where serious injury has occurred.”

Earlier this year, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that collision risks were 23 times greater when drivers of heavy trucks texted while driving. Dialing a cell phone and using or reaching for an electronic device increased risk of collision about six times in cars and trucks. The popular magazine Car and Driver released a report that showed texting and driving to be more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. This report obviously has caused a lot of controversy and discussions among safety advocates.

Some groups want tough laws on the distractions and are asking for restrictions on talking and texting by drivers of tractor trailers, motor coaches and large vans.

Automobile Manufacturers and the Governors Highway Safety Association are on the same page in support of restrictions for texting while driving. Surprisingly, 11 automakers have come together on a united front with the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers to support this important issue of auto safety and the use of handheld devices.

The Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA) believes that education and enforcement are critical to changing the behavior of drivers. A series of Public Service Announcements warning teen drivers of the dangers on distracted driving will be paid for by the National Safety Council and CTIA in an effort to promote safe driving.

Please be cautious while driving. Nothing is more important than your life and the lives of others.
